About Charles University

Charles University is the oldest and most prestigious university in the Czech Republic. University is well-known around the world since it is founded by a charter issued on 7th of April 1348 by Charles IV. When establishing University, a model of Bolognas and Paris universities was followed. In the beginning, it had 4 faculties: theological, liberal arts, law and medicine. Charles University has been always a center of Czech intelligence and also centre against suppressing forces in Czech society. Students from Charles university lead demonstration against totalitarian regime, which ceased to exist in 1989. Nowadays, Charles university is place with modern unviersity life, involved in plenty of international cooperations and is playing an important role in a broad specrtum of European and global programmes.
There are 17 faculties, 3 university institutes, 6 other units and 5 service facilities at University. In total, there are 8074 employees of University – 4653 people form academic and research staff and 3421 is another staff.
University is ranked in TOP 2% of the approximately 18,000 institutions of higher institutions in the world. According to QS ranking, Charles was 279th best university in the world and according to Academic Ranking of World Universities, it was among 201-300 best universities in the world.

About Second Faculty of medicine

Second Faculty of medicine is part of 17 faculties of Charles University. Second Faculty of Medicine is settled in the biggest hospital in the Czech Republic, where students go for practical classes and clinicals. Faculty has a very good reputation not only among Czech/Slovak students, but also among international students.

Recognition of degree in EU and Iran

Diploma from the Second Faculty of Medicine is internationally recognised in European union thanks to the Bologna process. The Faculty is listed on FAIMER list and is GMC accredited.

Where is Prague located?

The Second Facutly of Medicine is located in Prague, capital of Czech Republic. Prague is listed on UNESCO list and called also city of 100 towers. River of Vltava flows through Prague. City of Prague played important role in history of Central Europe for ages. Nowadays it attracts not only plenty of students, but also millions of tourists. Here is the list of touristic attractions one should not miss: Old Town = Staré Město, New Town = Nové Město, Charles Bridge = Karlův most, Prague Castle = Pražský Hrad, Wenceslas Square = Václavské náměstí, Old Town Square = Staroměstské náměstí, Lesser Town/Lesser Quarter = Malá Strana, National Theatre = Národní divadlo. In 1992 the historical centre of Prague, all 866 hectares, was listed in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Register.

Scholarships offered

There are following scholarships offered for International students:
1. Best International Medical Student Award – This award is granted to those students of 2nd to 6th studying year, that will demonstrate exceptional results. The Students percentage from the whole of studies must be among 95 – 100 percentile from students in English programme, among 90-100 percentile from students from the given programme and during the studies, student has succesfully completed most of the required exam at 2nd Faculty of Medicine of Charles University. This scholarship is 142500 Kč in given academic year.
2. Scholarship granted by Dean´s Provision no. 2/2009 – Top 10% of students will receive special reduction of their scholarship, that must be paid. Students must be placed among TOP 10% (according to percentile, which is calculated to the average academic result for the enrire length of study). This reduction of fee cannot be combined with Best International Student Award.

Accommodation for students

Students are offered a place at dormitories – they are usually accommodated in Kajetanka, Komenskeho or Hvezda dormitories, all of which are very close to the faculty. Rent is 5600 Kč (comparable to 200€) per month.

STUDY PROGRAM General medicine

Program of General medicine is offered at the Second Faculty of Medicine and has a very good reputation among students. It is completely taught in English. A maximum number of students accepted to study year in 2016/2017 was 90.
Tuition fees for students interested to study program of general medicine is 280 000 Kč (if they pay before 31st October), or 330 000 Kč (if they pay after 31st October) per one academic year. (conversion rate is 25Kč/ 1€)

Tuition fee for General medicine is 330.000Kč per academic year.

Living costs

Students should count with at least 400-500€ per one month (300-350€ for accommodation and 200€ for food and related costs.

Entrance exam

There are two options how to be accepted to Second Faculty of Medicine of Charles University

Entrance examination

It is necessary to come to the Czech Republic, sit written and oral examination in one day.  Applicants take written multiple choice test and interview. There are 4 areas from which applicants take a test: biology, physics, chemistry and logic (4×15 questions), which corresponds with curriculum from secondary school. Best students will be invited for oral examination – 2 questions need to be answered – maximum of 60 points might be awarded.

The final results are announced at the end of the entrance exam day.

Entrance exam dates

There are 2 options:

  • Regular date: 22 May 2019 – deadline for application is 28nd of February 2019
  • Alternative date: 20 June 2019 – deadline for application is 28nd of February 2019 (only if there is serious reason why you cannot attend regular date)

Application fee is 640Kč.
