Being accepted to university or college may change your life completely. What are the criteria for admission?

First of all it must be said, that criteria differ from Faculty to Faculty and from program to program.

There might be 3 different possibilities recognized:

  • Criteria, when applying to the Bachelor program
  • Criteria, when applying to the Master program
  • Criteria, when applying to Doctoral studies (PhD studies)

Let’s start with the first option – studying at the Bachelor’s level of studies. You just finished secondary school and would like to apply for a university or college in Slovakia. There is a need to submit a complete application electronically. In most cases, the following documents are required: electronic application form, application fee receipt, copy of passport, scan of academic documents and CV. A language certificate is not needed in most of cases and study gaps are accepted. After the submission of documents, the offer letter might be issued directly. Some universities (e.g. TUKE) also organise Skype interview with applicants, other (mostly medical, pharmaceutical and economic) perform also written entrance exam. The letter that was issued, is a conditional offer letter – the final letter is issued only after a process called nostrification. Nostrification is recognition of a secondary school certificate from your home country and may take up to 30 days from submission.

After completing the Bachelor’s level of education, students may opt for the second level of education – Master studies. Master studies do have a form of 2 or 3 programs, which extend knowledge obtained during bachelor. Students do submit application form, CV, copy of passport, application fee receipt and copy of Bachelor transcript of records and Bachelor degree. Afterwards, a conditional offer letter is issued. There is no obligation to continue within the same program for Masters– on the other hand, it makes more sense to finish in the same field of study as students began. There is tuition fees for studying in the English language, ranging from 1500€ to 11.000€.

And finally, doctoral studies are available for those students, who successfully finished the master’s program. Universities do provide PhD studies in English but only with tuition fees payment necessity. Students need to pick a suitable topic from the list and connect with the professor. After submission of documents and having entry interview with the admission committee, a student is awarded admission.
